Online Classes

PAA Online is a variety of online enrichment classes that offer students the chance to try new things, build new skills, and develop interests while working with industry professionals and engaging with peers. These fun online performing arts classes are designed to help develop skills that students can use in future performing arts endeavors.

Creative Play

Pre K – 2nd Grade

Mondays: June 1, 8, and 15

Come create worlds where we play different characters and live different lives as animals, fairytale characters, aliens, and more! We will use our bodies, voices, and imaginations as we play!

Hold Your Horses!: Come explore life in the jungle, forest, in the ocean, and more! We will play as household pets, jungle cats, bugs, and a variety of other animals. This class will investigate how animals move and help translate that into dancing and acting.

Once Upon a Dream: Come play as fairytale characters in whimsical worlds! We will explore a variety of popular characters and well-known stories as we develop our creativity and imagination!

Martians and Meteors: Let’s go to outer space! We’ll explore the universe as we fly on spaceships, go on adventures to new planets, and meet (and become) aliens of all shapes and sizes.

Disney Songs

Pre K – 2nd Grade

Wednesdays: June 3, 10, and 17

Each class will feature breakdowns of 2 classic Disney Songs while students enjoy singing and performing together! Beginning Ukulele

3rd – 6th Grade

Learn fundamental chords and basic strumming patterns in this online class for beginning ukulele! Students will engaged and strengthened in their ukulele skills while they build up to playing simple songs and chord progressions!

 Get moving with this introductory online class! This Hip Hop course will feature a warm up to get you sweating, a breakdown of some basic hip hop moves, and an exciting combination to a hit song!

Playwriting

6th – 12th Grade

Wednesdays: June 3, 10, and 17

This exciting new class will teach the fundamentals of the craft and to teach students to think like playwrights. This will be done through in class writing exercises, keeping a writing journal, and reading plays for form and content. By focusing on the 10-Minute Play, students will learn the skills to create a produceable play”

Class 1: Structure and format. We will introduce class objectives and the Playwriting journal project. Intro to play analysis and the basic elements of playwriting.

Class 2: Characters. Start class off with reading and discussing a ten minute play for structure elements. Discuss what makes a good character, desire, objectives, conflict and relationships.

Class 3. Dialogue. Analyze a play from a character point of view. Discuss levels of familiarity and common pitfalls. Wrap up journals, projects and debrief.

Songwriting

6th – 12th Grade

Thursdays: June 4, 11, and 18

Students will be taken through their own creative process of writing a song while learning the basic structure used by professionals. This course will take students through writing their own lyrics, putting together a song structure, and involving musicality through rhythm and melody.

It’s never too late to learn ( or dust off)  the basics. Ballet is a classic and beautiful form of dance and this class celebrates that! Dancers will learn the fundamentals and be taught the full flow of a ballet class! Learn some french, point your toes, and stand a little bit taller with this fun beginner class!

Sip and Paint

Ages 18+

Making art is good for the soul…so is wine! Grab your favorite beverage and some basic painting supplies and be led through an easy to follow, step by step process to create a beautiful painting! No prior experience is needed for this fun and easy beginner class. Whether you’re painting on a canvas, or a piece of cardboard, this class will show you how to create a painting you will love while you enjoy a drink with your fellow adults. Bob Ross would be so proud!

Online Class Registration

Space is limited and registrations are taken on a first come, first served basis. No registration is complete without payment.

After completing your registration form you will be directed to pay online with a credit or debit card. To pay by cash or check please enter the code ccpp into the promo code box. PAA’s Financial Manager will contact you for payment.

PAA’s online classes use Zoom as a video conferencing platform. Please make sure your personal technology meets the minimum specifications from Zoom. If you’ve never used Zoom before, please reference Zoom’s quick start guide to insure you are ready to go before your scheduled class. PAA is not able to provide technical assistance.

Katie Turner

Katie Turner grew up in Littleton, CO and received her BFA in Acting at the University of Colorado Boulder. She also received an endorsement from CU Boulder's Education Program to receive a K-12 Drama Education License from the Colorado Department of Education. She loves encouraging students to make big, bold choices and to push themselves to explore new ideas, movement, and creativity!

Madeline Shaffer

Madeline Shaffer grew up teaching and performing with her local studio in southern Illinois. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from Jacksonville University and then began working in NYC. While there, she choreographed the Off Broadway production of By Jupiter, worked for 2 years with the cult classic production of 420: The Musical, performed in a national tour, choreographed and directed a new musical, performed in front of the UN, and worked with several high schools and children’s programs choreographing shows and teaching classes. These high school programs include Stagedoor Manor where she has spent her summers choreographing for the past 6 years. While there she was able to work directly with the writer of Evil Dead the Musical to develop the World Premiere of a high school version for that show.  She has choreographed over 30 musical theatre productions and has over 10 years of teaching experience. She moved to Denver in September of 2019 and she is overjoyed to be the new Director of Dance for PAA. Working with young artists fills her with joy and purpose and she can’t wait to meet all of the wonderful students here in Highlands Ranch!

Jacob Shaffer

Jacob R. Shaffer is a playwright, dramaturg, and producer. He graduated in 2018 with a BA in theater from Millikin University, specializing in dramaturgy and with a minor in Gender Studies. His written work includes In The Hallow of his Hand, a verbatim play about the 1912 Presidential election, a full length jukebox musical, a documentary one act, and several ten-minute plays. In addition to his playwriting, Jacob has been production dramaturg or assistant director for many productions including with his own theater company: fti Theatre. He plans to pursue an MFA in dramaturgy starting in Fall of 2021.
