7 Audition Mistakes to Avoid

The opportunity to audition for the musical of your dreams has arrived! You instantly start searching for a song and a monologue that will forever move the directors.
But nailing the audition involves more than hitting that high note and delivering the monologue of a lifetime.
PAA’s expert teaching artists have identified seven common audition mistakes to avoid at your next audition.
And here’s the best part — they’re not just directors. They’re working actors, just like you, with decades of real audition experience on both sides of the table.
7 Audition Mistakes to Avoid:
Mistake #1: Forgetting To Have Fun
The directors (and the audience) can sense if you are enjoying the process. Don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the moment.
Mistake #2: Apologizing
No need to apologize. We know the audition process can be nerve-wracking. Take a deep breath and confidently show us your best self – no sorrys necessary.
Mistake #3: Being Too Quiet
Sing Loud! Remember, we need to hear you to know what gifts you are sharing!
Mistake #4: Singing Something You Don’t Enjoy
Sometimes we choose a song that we think we “should” sing instead of one we truly love. Choose material you love. Your audition pieces should show off your strengths. Make big choices and commit to them.
Mistake #5: Believing It’s You vs. The Directors
Directors want you to do well. In fact, everyone at the director’s table is rooting for you. They are on your side. So relax, take a deep breath, and have fun.
Mistake #6: Thinking “Prepared” Only Means Memorized
There’s more to audition prep than memorizing your song and monologue. These not-so-obvious steps include completing a vocal warm-up right before your audition, having a rehearsed Slate before your performing piece, and arriving well rested.
Mistake #7: Running Late
Arrive with plenty of time to get familiar with your surroundings, use the restroom, calm your nerves, etc.
